At Paralympics New Zealand we are really excited to once again having a Paralympic Games within the Oceania region. PNZ CE Fiona Allan explains what these “home Games” mean for New Zealand.

“Ten years to go – bring it on!”

When are the Brisbane 2032 Paralympic Games?

23 July 2022 marks 10 years to go to the start of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Olympic Games are scheduled for 23 July-8 August 2032, closely followed by the Paralympic Games 24 August-5 September 2032. They will happen 32 years after the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games.

Why is Brisbane 2032 a significant Paralympics for New Zealand?

Paris 2024 will be over 17,000km away from New Zealand. LA 2028 will be a little closer although still over 10,000km away. These Games in Brisbane are just under 2,500km away. This practically makes them a home Games for New Zealand.

This is really significant for New Zealand and our Para athletes. Para athletes from around the world will be preparing to compete and train in the region in the lead up to the Games. It’s an opportunity for New Zealand to join Australia in hosting Para athletes, qualification tournaments and pre-Games training camps in the build-up to 2032.

New Zealand Para athletes won’t be the only group to benefit. Brisbane 2032 also presents opportunities for other New Zealanders to be involved in the Paralympic Games as officials, as volunteers and as fans. They will have the opportunity to contribute and be a part of the world’s largest sporting event.

It’s an awesome opportunity in 2032 for our NZ Para athletes and Para athletes from across the Pacific.
